In Hamburg’s St. Pauli district, the Reeperbahn street is one of the two centres of Hamburg’s nightlife and also the city’s red-light district. It is also called die sündige Meile (the sinful mile).The name Reeperbahn comes from the old Low German word Reep, a heavy rope for a ship, and from Bahn, the way:  in older times ropes were produced on the “ropeway” for the nearby harbour.
