The heart of the city lies at the Rathausplatz, the Town Hall of Augsburg is one of the most significant secular buildings of the Renaissance style north of the Alps, built in the 17th century by Elias Holl. The Augsburger Rathaus now houses permanent exhibits on the history of the former imperial city and changing exhibitions on different historical and current political issues. The Goldener Saal is a popular venue for receptions, concerts and ceremonies. The basement of the Rathaus houses a Rathskeller. The 70-metre-tall Perlachturm, originally built as a watchtower in the 10th century, is nowadays part of an ensemble with the City Hall of Augsburg.
