Built in 1513 by <strong>Katherine Bri\u00e7onnet<\/strong>, Henry II offered the ch\u00e2teau as a gift to his mistress, <strong>Diane de Poitiers<\/strong>. After King Henry II died in 1559, Queen <strong>Catherine de Medicis<\/strong> forced Diane to exchange it for the Ch\u00e2teau Chaumont, then she made Chenonceau her own favorite residence. Another &#8220;Dame&#8221;, <strong>Louise Dupin<\/strong>, saved the ch\u00e2teau from destruction during the French Revolution.
