Fictional character, the detective Sherlock Holmes is present in four novels (A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Valley of Fear) and fifty six original stories written by author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His inspiration comes from Joseph Bell, his professor of medicine, who taught his students the analytical method; in fact, he used to impress them by making inferences about the character of the patients, sometimes even before the person has spoken. The character created by Conan Doyle seems real to the point that even today, letters from around the world addressed to him at 221B Baker Street! Eccentric bachelor, misogynist, smoker, cocaine addict, music lover and highly intelligent, Sherlock Holmes is not about to be forgotten.
