The Champ de Mars is a large public green-space in Paris, located in the 7th arrondissement, near the Eiffel Tower. The park is named after the Campus Martius of Rome, used for pasturing horses and sheep, and for military training activity of both the army and of private people. As such, it was dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war. During the French Revolution, the Champ de Mars was the setting of the Fête de la Fédération, on the 14 July 1790 and the setting of a massacre on 17 July 1791.The Champ de Mars was also the site of Expositions Universelles in 1867, 1878 and 1889.
