According to tradition, a few drops of Christ’s blood have been reported in Bruges as relics in 1146 by Thierry of Alsace, Count of Flanders, on his return from Palestine. What is certain is that the container in which the Holy Blood is kept is the original bottle carved in the crystal: it is preserved and venerated in the Basilica of the Holy Blood. Since the end of the thirteenth century, the procession of the Holy Blood takes place every each Ascension Day. Even today, thousands of spectators watched the procession which traces the historic arrival of Thierry of Alsace in the city and the religious part illustrates the biblical episodes with live tables.
