Historic bridge in Višegrad, over the Drina River, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Commissioned by Grand Vizier Mehmed Paša Sokolovic, who was taken away at an early age to be raised to serve as a janissary.
Construction of the bridge took place between 1571 and 1577.
A novel:
A famous book The Bridge on the Drina (1945) written by Yugoslav writer Ivo Andric, Nobel prize winning author.
About four centuries during the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian administrations of the region and describes the lives, destinies and relations of the local inhabitants, Muslims and Orthodox Christians living in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
