The Dreiländerspitze is one of the higher mountains in the Silvretta mountain range (Central Eastern Alps). The borders of Graubünden (Switzerland), Vorarlberg (Austria) and Tyrol (Austria) cross at the peak, hence its name (Dreiländerspitze literally means peak of three countries). The majority of the peaks in the Silvretta (Piz Buin is the most popular peak of the range) are elevated above three thousand metres and are surrounded by glaciers. Thus, the area is also known as the Blue Silvretta. In the 1920s Ernest Hemingway was staying in the region for a winter. Later, he wrote a couple of short stories about his skiing experiences in the Silvretta, some of these short stories are to be found in A moveable feast.

Mount Vesuvius (in Italian Monte Vesuvio and in Latin Mons Vesuvius) is today regarded as one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world because of the population of 3,000,000 people living nearby and its tendency towards explosive (Plinian) eruptions, although it is not currently erupting.
