The Romans, probably. In Villa Romana del Casale, a Roman villa (4th century) located about 5 km outside the town of Piazza Armerina, Sicily, southern Italy, was excavated a mosaic on the floor of the room dubbed the “Chamber of the Ten Maidens” (Sala delle Dieci Ragazze). Informally called “the bikini girls”, the maidens appear in a mosaic artwork which scholars named Coronation of the Winner. The young women perform sports including weight-lifting, discus throwing, running and ball-games. The Villa Romana del Casale contains the richest, largest and most complex collection of Roman mosaics in the world.

Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, the Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century. The temples of the Angkor area number over one thousand, the famous Temple of Angkor Wat said to be the world’s largest single religious monument.

A historic and archaeological city in Jordan, known as the Rose-Red City for the color of the rocks, established around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, Petra was famous above all for two things: its trade and its hydraulic engineering systems. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. Impressive entrance called the Siq from a deep split in the sandstone rocks and at the end of the narrow gorge stands Petra’s most elaborate ruin, Al Khazneh (The Treasury), hewn into the sandstone cliff.

This sacred site, Chichén Itzá, was one of the greatest Mayan centres of the Yucatán peninsula. Chichen Itza means “at the mouth of the well of the Itza” in the Itza language. Six square miles where hundreds of buildings once stood, but about thirty may still be seen by tourists. The buildings are connected by a dense network of formerly paved roads, called sacbeob. Dominating the center of Chichén is the Temple of Kukulkan (the Maya name for Quetzalcoatl), often referred to as “El Castillo”.

The Hill of Tara (Irish Teamhair na Rí, Hill of the Kings) was, according to tradition, the seat of the High King of Ireland. It is now an archaeological complex located near the River Boyne, that runs between Navan and Dunshaughlin in County Meath, Leinster. Atop the hill stands a stone pillar that was the Irish Lia Fáil (Stone of Destiny) on which the High Kings of Ireland were crowned: legends suggest that the stone was required to roar three times if the chosen one was a true king.
